Human Trafficking: Root Causes in Zambia

Zambia faces severe challenges that contribute to the prevalence of human trafficking, including widespread poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to essential resources. Archangel Group International (AGI) works to address these root causes, partnering with local authorities and organizations to protect vulnerable populations and reduce the factors that lead to exploitation.

Addressing Poverty and Vulnerability

More than half of Zambians live in extreme poverty, which creates high levels of vulnerability, especially for women and children. Limited access to clean water, healthcare, transportation, and stable food supplies exacerbates these hardships, pushing families to desperate measures. AGI’s initiatives provide essential resources and economic support to reduce the risk of trafficking by alleviating poverty.

Providing Access to Safe Water

Many Zambian families lack access to clean, nearby water sources, which often requires women and children to travel long distances at risky hours. AGI addresses this issue by building water wells in communities, reducing the need for dangerous journeys and lowering the risk of trafficking related to water collection.

This initiative not only improves daily life but also reduces the risks associated with long, dangerous journeys to fetch water.

Strengthening Law Enforcement Partnerships

AGI has partnered with Zambia’s Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, receiving approval to work with their Anti-Human Trafficking Division. Our team provides training on investigative tactics to help Zambian officers build solid cases against traffickers and bring them to justice.

Supporting Women’s Independence and Safety

Women in Zambia, particularly in rural areas, are disproportionately affected by poverty and lack of opportunity, making them vulnerable to trafficking. AGI provides skills training and economic opportunities to empower women, helping them achieve financial independence and reducing the risk of exploitation.

Combating the Roots of Human Trafficking

Archangel Group International (AGI) is committed to addressing the root causes of human trafficking in Zambia. By tackling poverty, improving access to essential resources, and educating communities about the risks of exploitation, AGI works to protect Zambia’s most vulnerable populations, including women and children. Through partnerships with local authorities and international organizations, AGI strives to create a safer, more empowered Zambia where every individual has the opportunity to live free from exploitation.

Our Efforts and Community Training

Building Awareness Through Community Workshops

AGI initiated community workshops across rural areas in Zambia, focusing on educating families about the risks of human trafficking and the importance of keeping children safe. These workshops provided crucial information on identifying trafficking tactics and reinforced the importance of community vigilance.

Training for Law Enforcement and Local Leaders

In collaboration with the Zambian government, AGI provided specialized training for local law enforcement and village leaders. This training focused on recognizing and combating human trafficking, enabling authorities to respond effectively and protect vulnerable individuals.

Expanding Education and Resource Access

AGI has continued to expand its educational outreach, incorporating digital resources and partnerships with NGOs to increase awareness and provide support. Our current efforts focus on empowering families with the knowledge to prevent trafficking, alongside building a network of community allies committed to ending exploitation.
